District H Hero: Rev. John W. Bowie

The Revered John W. Bowie is an influential community and faith-based leader in District H. He retired on July 9th of this year after serving for 18 years as pastor of the True Light Baptist Church located in historic Independence Heights. Pastor Bowie has played a major role in our community success by advocating for strong recovery programs, family involvement and the historic preservation. Pastor Bowie has been a catalyst for safer neighborhoods, more affordable housing, and increased health care for those who need it most.

The Reverend is the son of the late Dr. William Bowie, Jr. who pastored the True Light Baptist Church for 54 years. His mother was the late Ada Lue Smith Bowie. Coupled with the parental nurture and guidance, Rev. Bowie received rich Christian teachings at True Light Baptist Church and served as church custodian, deacon, and Sunday school superintendent and choir soloist during his high school and undergraduate years.

Rev. Bowie is president of the Independence Heights Baptist Pastors and Ministers Alliance, Board Member of Metropolitan One Church, One Childs, City of Houston Land Assemblage Redevelopment Authority, Catholic Charities CDC, Motherland Inc. and the Lighthouse Village. In addition, he serves as Chairman for Political Affairs with the Houston Metropolitan Baptist Ministers Conference, member of the Texas Legislative Committee to promote adoption of minority children and a member of the Texas Metropolitan Organization Executive Board.

Rev. Bowie is married to Thelma Louise Bowie who is also a product of True Light. They have a daughter Carmen who is married to George Bandy, and a son, John II who is married to ArRhonda, seven grand children: Destiny, Devin, George III, Giana, Layla and Justine & John III.
