District H Report: September 2011

Newsletters • September 30, 2011

Another year is flying by before our eyes! While we have faced many challenges over these past few months, I believe the District H and our City are headed in the right direction. We continue to improve our aging infrastructure, see progress on the North and East rail lines, and it looks like some rain has finally found its way here! Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s anything I can assist with. As always, thank you for your continued friendship and support.

District Spotlight – Al Martinez, Sr.

Al Martinez, Sr. has made his living as a real estate and insurance broker for the last 48 years, and has been the Precinct 206 precinct judge for over 30 years. He is also the recipient of the Bronze Star, serving in the Korean War as a Marine. I’m proud to call Al my friend. Learn More About Al »

Paws on Patios

Ziggy’s Bar and Grill is the first establishment to apply and receive approval to permit dogs on patios. Houston restaurants can apply for an optional variance, allowing pet-owners to take their four-legged friends with them to their favorite spots. Paws on Patios and Pat Walsh did a fantastic job and I was pleased to help make this a reality. I thank all those involved and the Mayor’s office for ensuring the success of this effort. Project Update

I’m proud to announce that after many years, the Sampson Street resurfacing project has finally been completed. This is great news for the residents of the Second Ward neighborhood. In addition, $5 million in stimulus funding has been allocated to construct new sidewalks on Navigation, York and Sampson. These new sidewalks will connect the Second Ward to the new East End Light Rail line and improve pedestrian mobility in the area. This project is “shovel ready” and is based on extensive community input.

This week, Council approved agenda item number 23 which will bring complete street reconstructions to N. Eastwood, N. Super, Irma, Sharman and Wynne. This project will help continue to revitalize District H.

District H Troop Drive

This year our office will be kicking off the first annual “District H Troop Drive” in partnership with Operation Interdependence. The Drive is to support the brave men and women who serve overseas. The troop drive kicks off on November 9 and runs through November 30.

I’m excited that over 16 District H elementary schools have already volunteered to help write notes and Christmas cards for our troops, and I welcome all of you to become involved too! Please sign up to help collect goods, write notes, sponsor a box or fill packages. You may also contact Jerry Peruchini in my office via phone at 832-393-3225 or email.

Star of Hope Mural at City Hall

Created by residents of Star of Hope, with support from the Connect2Art Project, ‘Transitions’ depicts a homeless man who sees a better version of himself in the mirror, someone transitioning into a successful person. The mural was completed over an 8 week session, incorporating in-depth discussions about what the artists wanted to express and the imagery that would best convey their emotions and thoughts.
