Pop Off: Congrats Dynamo; Troop Drive Kicks Off; Washington High Makes History

Eye On Council • November 16, 2011

Congratulations to the Houston Dynamo, MLS Eastern Conference champions as they prepare to compete for their 3rd MLS Cup on Sunday in Los Angeles. At 5PM today, we will be hosting a send-off rally here at City Hall and I encourage all to attend. I look forward to another hometown championship team, Go Dynamo!

The Annual District H Troop Drive continues this week; there are 7 drop off boxes throughout District H and 1 here at the City Hall Annex. Our team is collecting basic goods to send to our brave men and women overseas in time for the Christmas Holiday. Beef jerky, peanut butter crackers, razors, toothbrushes and toothpaste are some key items that will make a big difference to our troops on the front lines. For more information, please contact Jerry Peruchini in the District H office at 832-393-3225 or via jerry.peruchini@houstontx.gov. Once more, I want to thank Operation Interdependence, the Office of Veteran Affairs, Walgreens and Kroger for their partnership in this endeavor.

I’d like to thank the North Shepherd Area Business Association and Melrose Civic Club for hosting neighborhood clean ups this past weekend. Working together, we are making our neighborhoods safer, cleaner and greener! To work with our office on your own neighborhood clean up, please contact the District H team at 832-393-3003.

Congratulations to Booker T. Washington High School which was recognized as a significant part of Texas history and awarded a Historical Marker over the weekend. The Booker T. Washington Alumni Association worked extremely hard to make this dedication happen and I appreciate their efforts and thank them for their commitment to this wonderful school.

Support Ripley House Neighborhood Center tomorrow by purchasing a $10 lasagna plate starting at 11AM. Located at 4410 Navigation, Ripley House provides numerous services for our District H constituents. To order a plate, please contact Bolivar Fraga at 713-315-6400 or via bfraga@neighborhood-centers.org.

A special thank you to City employee Ralph DeLeon and the Old Sixth Ward TIRZ for their work in creating a new dog park off Sawyer. This is appreciated and will be an asset to the neighborhood.
