Pop Off: Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe; Christmas in the Park; Pet Photos with Santa

Eye On Council • December 14, 2011

On Monday, we celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe here in District H. Our Lady of Guadalupe or a “Lady from Heaven” first appeared in 1531 outside of what is now Mexico City. Our Lady of Guadalupe spreads a message of love and compassion and an incredible list of miracles, cures and interventions are attributed to Her. Hundreds of friends and neighbors paid their respects on Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in the Second Ward.

On Saturday, over 60 children received toys and books during the Independence Heights Christmas in the Park celebration. There was a special visit from Santa and the kids enjoyed not only the gifts but also time with family and friends from the community. I would like to thank the Independence Heights Redevelopment Council, volunteers from Houston’s Youth Council and the District H team for their hard work to make Christmas in the Park a success.

Our 2nd Annual Pet Photos with Santa at Natural Pawz was a huge success over the weekend; we collected over $100 dollars to benefit BARC. I would like to thank Natural Pawz, BARC and the District H team for their efforts on this fun event.

Santa’s tour of District H libraries continues on December 20th at the Moody Neighborhood Library at 6:00PM and on December 21st at the Flores Neighborhood Library at 10:30AM. Old St. Nick is visiting with children, bringing holiday cheer and reading Christmas stories! For more information, please contact Laura Thorp in the District H office at 832-393-3003.

The last SNAP and BARC event of the year is taking place on Sunday starting at 7:30AM at Ripley House, located at 4410 Navigation Boulevard. This weekend’s spay and neuter initiative serves zip codes 77011 and 77023. I want to thank our neighbors that have volunteered their time for this important cause.  Hundreds of feral cats have been spayed or neutered this year and we have taken positive steps to controlling the population in our neighborhoods. For more information, please contact Susan Lamb at 713-661-3565.
