Keeping it Green

Council Member Ed Gonzalez • June 22, 2012

I dare you to say the word, ‘parklet’ and not be tickled. It’s just so fun to say. And the best part? The Parklet Program is a meaningful idea for District H residents.

The program would allow a business to adopt nearby parallel parking spaces and create a ‘pocket park,’ which would both increase green space and promote vibrant street life.

The people of District H have an impressive track record when it comes to caring for the health and beauty of our community. Neighbors pitched in for the  District H ‘GO Green!’ Initiative. We’ve organized events to clean up and prevent illegal dumping and we’ve worked on numerous beautification projects.

It was with these community successes in mind that I introduced the Parklet Program last week. Over the next few months, we’ll discuss its benefits with Council committees in hopes that by year’s end, the Parklet Program will become a reality.

As we wait for the Council’s decision, I hope you’ll help me ‘Keep it Green’ in District H this summer. Here are three ways you can take action:

  1. Report illegal dumping to 3-1-1 or to the Houston Police Department Environmental Division at 713-525-2728.
  2. Participate in our next District H ‘GO Green!’ event.
  3. Give us your ideas about what ‘greening up’ we can do in your community.

With your support, ideas and, more importantly, your involvement, we’ll be able maintain a community that we’re all proud to call home.
