Pop Off: Community Health Fair; Our Lady of Guadalupe Church Celebrates 100 Years; London Olympics

Eye On Council • August 16, 2012

It saddens me that once more a senseless shooting was in the news. My thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to all of those affected by the College Station shooting. I would like to once more refer citizens to www.readyhoustontx.gov to view a timely video about how to handle an active shooter situation and gain greater insight. Run.Hide.Fight. was produced through a Department of Homeland Security grant by the Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security. It is a tool for our citizens to be prepared for the worst and has garnered national attention during these tough times.

I would like to thank Neighborhood Centers Inc. and Northline Commons for hosting another wonderful annual ‘Back to School and Community Health Fair’ this past Saturday. The fair provides health screenings, immunizations, and much needed school supplies to families in need. It was a pleasure to spend time with the many volunteers and attendees at Northline Commons Mall. I want to commend Mr. Jeff Procell, the team at Neighborhood Centers and the community leaders who dedicated long hours to make this event a success.

This Saturday, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in the East End celebrates 100 years. I want to congratulate Father Edward Kilianski, the parish staff, the congregation and the families of the church for their continued commitment to their community and their faith. The 100 year celebration will take place this Saturday with mass commencing at 6:30PM. Our Lady of Guadalupe is located at 2405 Navigation Boulevard. For more information, please visit www.olghouston.org or dial 713-222-0203.

In closing, I want to say how much I miss the Olympics already! (I got hooked on them for a little while.) I want to congratulate our American teams for their hard work and accomplishments. Our nation was very well represented. It was a great showing of teamwork and our athletes made us proud. It was amazing to see the great athletic feats from around the world and I would like to commend the City of London on a job well done hosting the 30th Olympiad.
