This past week our nation witnessed another senseless tragedy. My condolences go out to the family and friends of the victims of the Wisconsin Sikh shooting. This type of violence is not welcome and not accepted in our society. My thoughts, prayers, and best wishes are with the people of Wisconsin. I want to encourage everyone to attend this Thursday’s candlelight vigil at the steps of City Hall to honor the victims; it will begin at 7:00PM.
On that note and with the Aurora Shooting also still fresh on our minds – I would like to refer citizens to www.readyhoustontx.gov to view a timely video about how to handle an active shooter situation. Run.Hide.Fight. was produced through a Department of Homeland Security grant by the Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security. It is a tool for our citizens to be prepared for the worst and has garnered attention nationally during these tough times.
GO Neighborhoods will be hosting their quarterly community meeting this Thursday, August 9 at Marshall Middle School. The meeting will kick off at 5:30PM and all community members are welcome. GO Neighborhoods has done a lot of great work in the Near Northside community and I am happy to support their efforts. For more information about this meeting, please contact the District H team via email at districth@houstontx.gov or via phone at 832-393-3003.
Last week, the Houston Police Department announced a new partnership between the department’s TAPS (Teen and Police Service) Academy and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Houston. This new partnership will ensure that at-risk teens continue a mentorship relationship after their 15 week program with HPD concludes. This proactive approach to working with our youth is a great example of tackling public safety through innovative and creative approaches. I want to commend HPD and Big Brothers Big Sisters for working together for the benefit of our kids.
