Pop Off: Fall Fiesta; LATISM; Family Halloween and JubiLEE

Eye On Council • October 24, 2012

I look forward to another active weekend in District H. I’d like to invite all residents to join us this Saturday at Moody Park beginning at 11AM for a ‘Fall Fiesta’ and Groundbreaking Celebration. The Moody Park Community Center will be undergoing a much-needed renovation and expansion and I am excited to celebrate with our neighbors and friends. The program will begin at 1PM and I look forward to being joined by Mayor Parker, Sheriff Garcia, Congress-members Gene Green & Sheila Jackson Lee, as well as Director Joe Turner and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. I want to give a special thank you to the Mayor’s Office of Special Events for their help in coordinating this event with parks and the District H Team.

LATISM’s Annual Conference is coming to Houston from October 25-27, and I want to encourage all users of social media, beginners and experts, to participate. ‘Latinos in Social Media’ is committed to engaging Latinos online to affect positive changes for our community. I am proud to actively use social media platforms to connect with constituents, to promote District H and our city, and to help connect individuals.  I look forward to seeing you there!

This Friday, head to the MD Anderson YMCA, located at 705 Cavalcade for a Family Halloween Carnival from 6-9PM. I am proud to support this annual event hosted by Representative Jessica Farrar and know this will be another successful celebration. Admission is free for the whole family and there will be game booths, food booths, moonwalks, and more.

CAN DO Houston is building a community garden this Saturday at Betsy Ross Elementary School and are looking for more volunteers! The planting begins at 8:30AM at 2819 Bay Street and materials are provided. All ages are welcome for this fun community project. For more information about CAN DO’s community garden, please contact the District H Team via email at DistrictH@houstontx.gov or via phone at 832-393-3003.

Finally, I am looking forward to celebrating Lee High School’s 50th JubiLEE Celebration this weekend. As a proud Class of 1987 ‘General’ – I never imagined that I would someday be recognized as a Distinguished Alumni, but am humbled and honored. (It’s pretty cool that Billy Gibbons of ‘ZZ Top’ fame is also an honoree.) I look forward to catching up with old friends and celebrating my High School’s proud history. Congratulations to Lee High School, and I wish you continued success over the next 50 years.
